How to Apply Sunscreen

A good start to protecting your skin from the sun is finding a sunscreen that’s right for you. Did you know that sunscreen can only protect you if you apply it correctly? Follow these simple tips to get the most benefit from your sunscreen!

  • First, remember to buy a good sunscreen with a SPF* 30 or higher, is water resistant, and has broad spectrum coverage. Broad spectrum sunscreens protect you from damaging UVA and UVB rays .
  • Use sunscreen every day. Apply generously and thoroughly 15 minutes before going outdoors, even on a cloudy day. It takes 15 minutes for the sunscreen to absorb into your skin before providing any protection.
  • Do you know how much sunscreen to apply? Warmer weather typically means more bare skin is exposed. Most adults need at least one ounce of sunscreen to cover exposed skin. That’s equal to one full shot glass.
  • Take time to cover all exposed skin including your ears, neck, face, legs, top of feet, and your scalp if you have thin hair or are bald. Also consider using a sun hat as extra protection for your scalp. Get someone to help apply sunscreen to your back if it is exposed.
  • To remain protected, reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
  • Do not use expired sunscreen.
